Vocado vs Wispr Flow
Updated
I'm Zam, I make Vocado. Wispr Flow is the app most people try first, and for good reason: it's polished, it's everywhere, and its AI editing is genuinely nice. This page is for people wondering whether they need all of that, or whether a smaller, cheaper Mac app does the job.
Wispr Flow facts below come from wisprflow.ai and its help docs, checked 3 November 2026.
Quick answer
- Pick Wispr Flow if you want AI to tidy up your speech into polished writing, you need it on Windows, iPhone or Android too, or you're rolling it out to a team that needs SSO, SOC 2, ISO 27001 or a HIPAA BAA.
- Pick Vocado if you're on a Mac, you want your words typed as you said them, and you'd rather pay $4.99 a month than $15.

Where Wispr Flow is better
Honestly, in a few big ways.
AI cleanup. Flow removes ums, adds punctuation and formats your writing, and you can set a different style for messages, work chat and email. If you want speech to come out sounding like you typed it carefully, that's Flow's whole point. Vocado doesn't do this. It transcribes, it doesn't rewrite.
Every device. Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Vocado is Mac only. If you dictate on your phone a lot, Flow wins.
Teams and compliance. Growth and Enterprise plans add SSO, admin controls and org-wide HIPAA enforcement. Vocado is one person's app, built for individuals.
Where Vocado is better
Price. $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, against $15 or $144. Over a year that's about $100 back in your pocket.
No word limits to think about. Flow's free plan slows down after 2,000 words a week on desktop. Vocado has a 14-day trial, then you pay and dictate as much as you like.
Small and native. Vocado is a native Swift menu bar app: a 5.7 MB download, about 12 MB installed. It sits in the menu bar and stays out of the way.
Consistent speed. A 30-second note comes back in under 2 seconds. Speed that crept up over weeks was the main reason I stopped using other apps, so keeping it flat is the thing I care about most. It's been my daily driver for months, hours a day, mostly into Claude Code.
Your words, not a rewrite. Some people don't want AI touching their text, especially when dictating prompts or code-adjacent stuff where exact wording matters.
No account. Install, start the trial, go. History stays on your Mac.
Privacy, plainly
Both are cloud apps. Neither is "local". With Vocado, your audio goes to a cloud transcription provider (Groq Whisper), is processed and deleted, and isn't stored. Wispr Flow says your data is never sold and lets you choose whether it's used to improve Flow. Worth knowing: on Free and Pro, that model-improvement setting and storing your dictations on Wispr's servers are both on by default, so check Settings, then Data and Privacy, if that matters to you. If you need audio to never leave your Mac, neither app is for you: look at Superwhisper, VoiceInk or Spokenly with local models.
Why I built Vocado
I tried the others, Wispr Flow included. Each one had something that didn't fit how I work, and the biggest one for me was speed that got worse over time. So I built my own and made it as small and boring as possible: press a key, talk, text appears.
Try it
If $15 a month feels like a lot for dictation, give Vocado two weeks. No credit card.
