Vocado vs MacWhisper

Updated

I'm Zam, I make Vocado. MacWhisper and Vocado get compared a lot because both have "Whisper" somewhere in the story, but they're aimed at different jobs. MacWhisper is mainly a tool for transcribing audio and video files, and the version you buy from its website also does system-wide dictation. Vocado is built for one thing: dictating into whatever app you're in.

MacWhisper facts come from macwhisper.com, its Gumroad page, its help docs and the App Store listing, checked 3 November 2026.

Where MacWhisper is better

File transcription. Drop in an interview or a podcast episode and get a transcript, all on your own Mac. That's MacWhisper's home turf, and Vocado isn't built around it.

Local and offline. MacWhisper transcribes on your Mac by default, with Whisper models (and Parakeet on Pro, Apple Silicon only), so once a model is downloaded it works without internet and your audio stays put. Its site says no audio or text is sent anywhere when you use the default local models. Vocado is cloud only.

Pay once. Pro is a one-time €64 with lifetime updates. If you hate subscriptions, that's a big point in its favour.

Lots of model choice. Besides the local models, Pro lets you plug in your own API keys for cloud transcription (OpenAI, Groq, ElevenLabs, Deepgram and others) and for AI prompts (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more).

Where Vocado is better

Built for dictation first. Press a hotkey, speak, press it again, and the text appears where your cursor is. There's a shortcut to paste your last transcription anywhere, and searchable history if something goes wrong. That loop is the whole app.

Speed that doesn't depend on your Mac. Vocado transcribes in the cloud, so a 30-second note comes back in under 2 seconds on any supported Mac. Local models are only as quick as your hardware, and MacWhisper's own docs say on-device transcription is much slower on Intel Macs.

Small. A 5.7 MB download. No models to download or manage.

Nothing to set up. No models, no API keys, no account.

Indie support. I build Vocado and I answer the support email myself.

Privacy, plainly

MacWhisper wins here with its default local models: audio never leaves your Mac. If you switch it to a cloud provider, your audio goes to that provider instead. Vocado sends audio to a cloud transcription provider, where it's processed and deleted, not stored. No account, and history stays on your Mac.

Why I built Vocado

I dictate hours a day, mostly into Claude Code and work messages. I tried the popular apps and each had a dealbreaker for how I work, with speed that got slower over time being the big one. So I built a dictation app that does the dictation loop and nothing else. It's been my daily driver for months.

FAQ

Is MacWhisper good for dictation?

The version sold on macwhisper.com does system-wide dictation. The App Store version, "Whisper Transcription", doesn't, because of App Store restrictions. MacWhisper is best known for transcribing audio and video files locally. If dictation is your main use, a dedicated dictation app like Vocado, Superwhisper or Wispr Flow may suit you better.

How much does MacWhisper cost?

As of November 2026, the MacWhisper site lists a free version and a Pro license at €64, paid once, with lifetime updates. The App Store version, "Whisper Transcription", uses in-app purchases instead, including subscriptions.

Does Vocado work offline like MacWhisper?

No. Vocado needs internet. MacWhisper runs its models locally, so it works offline once you've downloaded one.

Is Vocado a MacWhisper alternative?

For live dictation, yes. For transcribing recordings, MacWhisper is the better tool.

Does Vocado need an Apple Silicon Mac?

No. Transcription happens in the cloud, so it runs on any Mac with macOS 14 or later.
