Vocado vs Aqua Voice

Updated

I'm Zam, I make Vocado. Aqua Voice is impressive. It runs its own speech model, it can show your words while you're still talking, and it puts a lot of work into technical terms. Here's how the two compare.

Aqua Voice facts come from aquavoice.com, its pricing page, feature pages, FAQ and user guide, checked 3 November 2026.

Where Aqua Voice is better

Jargon. Aqua says Avalon scored 97.4% key-term accuracy on its own AISpeak-10 benchmark, against 65.1% for Whisper Large v3. That's their benchmark, not an independent one, but if you dictate lots of product names, code terms or medical vocabulary, it's worth testing side by side. Vocado's custom dictionary helps with names and terms, but Aqua puts more into this.

Speed you can see. Realtime Mode shows your words in the toolbar as you speak, then cleans them up. Vocado shows the text when you press the key again to stop. I haven't timed the two side by side, so if raw speed is your top priority, try both.

Edit by voice. Select text in any app and say "make it shorter" or "turn this into a list". Vocado doesn't do voice editing.

Platforms. Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Vocado is Mac only.

Students. 70% off is a great deal if you have a school email.

Where Vocado is better

Price for unlimited use. Vocado is $39.99 a year with no word limits. Aqua Pro is $120 a year, and Realtime Mode needs Max at $228 a year.

Languages. Vocado has 86 languages; you pick yours in Settings (auto-detect is tuned for English). Aqua lists 49. If you dictate in a less common language, check Aqua supports it.

Simple. No modes or plans to compare. Press a hotkey, talk, press it again, and the text appears at your cursor. A 30-second note comes back in under 2 seconds, and that's held steady for me over months of daily use.

Small and native. A 5.7 MB download, about 12 MB installed, sitting in your menu bar.

Indie support. I build Vocado and I answer the support email myself.

Privacy, plainly

Both are cloud apps. Vocado sends audio to a cloud transcription provider, where it's processed and deleted, not stored. No account, and history stays on your Mac. Aqua offers a Privacy Mode where it says nothing is stored on its servers, and its Business plan adds zero data retention. Its History tab lives on your device and keeps recent audio locally for 3 days. If you need audio to stay on your Mac, look at VoiceInk, Superwhisper or Spokenly with local models instead.

Why I built Vocado

I tried the popular dictation apps and each one had a dealbreaker for how I work. The big one was speed that got worse over time. I didn't need the quickest app on paper. I needed one that was fast every single time, hours a day, dictating into Claude Code and work messages. That's Vocado.

FAQ

Is Vocado faster than Aqua Voice?

I haven't benchmarked them against each other. Aqua's Realtime Mode (on Max) shows words as you speak, which Vocado doesn't do. Vocado returns a 30-second note in under 2 seconds and stays consistent. If speed is all you care about, try both.

How much does Aqua Voice cost?

As of November 2026, Aqua Voice has a free plan with 1,000 words, Pro at $10 a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, and Max at $19 a month billed yearly or $24 monthly. Students get 70% off Pro and Max.

Is Vocado a good Aqua Voice alternative?

If you want unlimited Mac dictation for less money and don't need voice editing, realtime text or mobile apps, yes. For heavy technical jargon, test both.

How many languages do they support?

Vocado has 86 languages; you pick yours in Settings (auto-detect is tuned for English). Aqua Voice's site says it understands 49.

Does either work offline?

Vocado needs internet. Aqua's FAQ says its cloud dictation needs internet too, and that offline availability varies by platform, app version and mode, so ask Aqua support if you need it.
