Best dictation apps for Mac in 2026
Updated
I'm Zam, and I make Vocado, one of the apps on this list. So yes, I have a horse in this race. I've tried to write this the way I'd want to read it: what each app is actually good at, what it costs today, and who should pick it. Vocado doesn't win every row, and I'll say where it loses.
Prices and features below were checked on each product's own website on 2 November 2026. They change often, so check before you buy.

The apps, one by one
Wispr Flow
The best known name in the category. Its pitch is AI that removes filler words, adds punctuation and formats your text, with different styles per app. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, supports 100+ languages, and has SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and a HIPAA BAA option. The free plan gives you 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 a month. Pick it if you want polished, auto-edited text everywhere, across every device, or you're buying for a team. Vocado vs Wispr Flow
Superwhisper
The power user's toolbox. Local Whisper models for free and offline, cloud models and AI "modes" (email, message, custom prompts) on Pro, and one license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. There's also a $249.99 lifetime option. Pick it if you like configuring things, want offline, or want AI rewriting with your choice of model. Vocado vs Superwhisper
MacWhisper
Mostly a file transcription app (podcasts, interviews, meetings) that also does system-wide dictation (the version from macwhisper.com only, not the App Store one). Transcribes on your Mac by default with Whisper models (Parakeet on Pro, Apple Silicon only), with optional cloud transcription using your own API keys, and Pro is a one-time €64. Pick it if you transcribe recordings a lot, or want local dictation with a single payment. Vocado vs MacWhisper
VoiceInk
Open source (GPL v3), local by default with optional cloud providers on your own API key, and a one-time $25 to $49 depending on how many Macs. Needs macOS 15, and it's built for Apple Silicon (its docs point Intel users to cloud providers). Pick it if you want offline, open source and no subscription. Vocado vs VoiceInk
Spokenly
Generous free tier: unlimited local transcription with no account, or bring your own API keys. Runs nearly everywhere, including Linux and a Chrome extension, and its Mac version from spokenly.app (not the App Store one) has an MCP feature so Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can ask you for voice input. Its default model is cloud, so pick a local one if you want it offline. Pick it if you want free and local, or you live in coding agents and like tinkering. Vocado vs Spokenly
Aqua Voice
Built around its own speech model, Avalon, which Aqua says scored 97.4% key-term accuracy in its own benchmark. Realtime Mode (Max plan) shows words while you talk, and Edit Mode lets you select text and say what to change. Pick it if you dictate a lot of technical terms, or raw speed is what you care about most. Vocado vs Aqua Voice
Apple Dictation
Free, already on your Mac, decent for short bursts. No history, no custom dictionary in standard Dictation, and it stops on its own after 30 seconds with no speech. Pick it if you dictate occasionally and don't want another app. Vocado vs Apple Dictation
Vocado
Mine. A native Swift menu bar app: 5.7 MB download, about 12 MB installed, macOS 14 or later. Press a hotkey, talk, press it again, and the text lands at your cursor in any app. A 30-second note comes back in under 2 seconds via Groq Whisper, and that speed has stayed the same for me over months of daily use. It has searchable history, a custom dictionary, a shortcut to paste your last transcription, and works in 86 languages (auto-detect is tuned for English, so pick yours in Settings if you dictate in another).
What it doesn't have: offline mode (it needs internet), an iPhone or Windows app, or AI rewriting. Audio is processed in the cloud and deleted, not stored. No account, and history stays on your Mac.
I built it because I tried the others and each had a dealbreaker for how I work. The big one was speed that got worse over time. Vocado has been my daily driver for months, dictating hours a day into Claude Code and work messages.
Pick it if you want plain, fast dictation on a Mac, without AI rewriting your words, for $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
